This course discusses the development and role of ASEAN as a regional organisation in
Southeast Asia. This course also discusses Malaysia's contribution to the establishment and
development of the ASEAN Community. To provide a comprehensive understanding of ASEAN,
the course is divided into five main themes, namely ASEAN background, including establishment
of ASEAN and the ASEAN Charter, ASEAN Political-security Community, ASEAN Economic
Community, ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community and ASEAN in a global context, including the
concepts of Global ASEAN, ASEAN Centrality and development in ASEAN. Lectures and
discussions will include strategies to further integrate ASEAN, intra-ASEAN development, and intra-
ASEAN trade and investment and ASEAN relationships with global partners.
